The Wise Way: Your 8-Step Divorce Roadmap for Washington State

1. Filing (Summons & Petition)

The journey begins by filing the Summons and Petition for Dissolution of Marriage with the Washington Superior Court. This formally opens your case and starts the clock.

2. Service (Notify Respondent)

Once filed, the Respondent must be formally served with the documents. This ensures they are legally notified and given the opportunity to respond.

3. Temporary Orders

While the case moves forward, the court can issue temporary orders to handle urgent matters like child support, parenting schedules, use of the home, or financial restraints.

4. Discovery

We exchange financial information and other relevant documents with the other party. This ensures both sides have a clear and honest picture of the assets, debts, and facts involved.

5. Parenting Class

If there are children under 18, both parents are required to complete a court-approved parenting class. It is a necessary step to focus on the best interests of your children.

6. Resolution (Mediation/Collaborative/Litigation)

7. Final Documents
